Does there exist some sort of "roadmap" for MonoX, perhaps describing where efforts are being directed for the vNext?

Hi,
we will publish a bug fix release during next month. The next major upgrade (5.0) should be ready in August. It will include: better support for customization via dependency injection, import/invitation, additional SN relationship parts, including "people you may know" and various variants of social graphs, support for tighter integration with Facebook (login, profile and social graph import) and other social networks, flexible user profile, chat, better support for mobile clients, responsive design additions and HTML5 modules.
The subsequent release will mark the beginning of a new era for MonoX. It is still in the very early stage, but I can already say that it will remove the limitations of a particular technology (Web Forms) or platform (Windows).

Denis,

Thank you for the hint about MonoX’s future. I certainly don’t expect you to go into detail about the mentioned “new era”, but are you able to, at this time, share with us whether ‘removing the limitations of’ webforms or Windows means “moving away from” ? or more likely that it will be extended to other platforms?

I am relatively new to MonoX and primarily a webforms guy(with some MVC use). I’d recently been looking to settle into a new ASP.Net based CMS….one I could get intimate with, develop around, etc… It sounds like you are talking about something more than just moving to MVC.

If the answers to those questions are still hush-hush right now, could you tell us if there is a date scheduled to reveal an overview of what that new direction is?

There are no big secrets - we just want to keep up the momentum and allow more users to enjoy their experience with MonoX as a powerful and flexible platform. Additionally, we have learned a lot from our users during the last few years, and want to put this knowledge into good use.

We are working hard to break all bindings to a particular database backend, ORM tool, front-end controls, whatever. We will stick with ASP.NET and allow both Web Forms and MVC developers to use all MonoX features - as you probably know, MVC philosophy currently does not really fit in. Additionally, we plan to make the base layers much more configurable and front-end agnostic, allowing developers to use full backend functionality from the tool and the platform of their choice. We are aware of the complexity of the current API - you can achieve a lot with it, but there is definately some room for improvement on our end. Therefore, we are focusing on the base layers and API structure at this point. At the end, it should allow you to use the same functionality from your ASP.NET application that references MonoX on the local machine and some external PHP app using REST calls to the same API.

But this is all MonoX 6 - and will not be ready this year. We will soon open our community feedback system to interact with our users more efficiently, and are determined to build the next great platform for them.

a plus of MonoX is definitely the WebParts framework (Portal Servers style), even if some people think (in error) that it's an old technology

some nice and simple design with the latest MVC etc. (but can't compare in features with MonoX) is at CompositeC1 (opensource at CodePlex - http://compositeC1.codeplex.com). Guess you can take a look at its code too

btw, when one bookmarks such a discussion page they get "Mono Support - Discussion Forums" as title (and have to rename it if they want bookmarks from other support pages too). I'd expect the discussion title (of the 1st post in the discussion) to be in the page title (not sure if it's a MonoX issue or specifically of how this discussion site is configured)

Hi Clipflair,

just to update you on the discussion topic and page title issue, we have implemented this and you can see the result right here on our forum.

Let us know if there is anything that you want to add before we push out the 4.7 version.

Thanks

adding this as Favorite says Roadmap, I'd expect some prefix like site title , then maybe area title then forum title, then topic title

e.g. Mono software - Support - MonoX - Roadmap
