Hello,

I stumbled across a few posts referencing MonoX when I was searching for Free, Open-Source CMS. The weird thing is that I don't see a lot of people talking about it compared to some of the others out there and it seems as though it's been around for a while.

Does anyone know where I can find where it started and how it has evolved?

I'd like to use it for a big project, but I don't see a lot of websites that I'm familiar with using it.

Thanks!

Jason

Hi Jason,
MonoX was initially developed in 2004., and was based on ideas brought to life by once popular iBuySpy portal starter kit. Many of older ASP.NET CMSes shared the same roots, but MonoX introduced several original ideas (drag and drop module instantiation and interactive personalization) that were later brought to mainstream by ASP.NET 2 Web parts framework. It was than decided to redevelop MonoX from scratch and have it support Web parts natively. It slowly evolved over the last three years, based on user feedback and real-life project requirements.

MonoX never was only a simple CMS, it always played a role of Web application framework. Besides public Web sites, dozens of complex intranet applications run on top of it. Now it also offers a complete subset of social networking Web parts.

You may not heard a lot about it since marketing was never a priority, and we worked closely with our partners on their projects without sharing too many information with the development community. It was also not a free project from the start, but it was latter decided to offer MonoX to the community and let it grow. We hope you'll enjoy it.

Regards,

Denis

Thanks for the information Denis.

I've been a .net developer for 8 years now and it's been sad to see PHP open source solutions surpass .net in the last few years. I'm very happy MonoX was offered to the community. I'll dig into it and see if it'll work for us.

How many developers are working on it?

How would I contribute?

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Denis,

I tried installing it twice and keep running into the same issue.

I downloaded the project and deployed to my IIS 7. I then created a database in SQL Server Studio, a user with the role of DB_Owner. I verified that the user could reach and create tables by connecting with the credentials in Sql Server Studio.

I then ran the Wizard by going to localhost. Everything worked fine until the final step. When I click Finish, it immediately forwards me to an error page with this error:

Invalid object name 'dbo.Language'.

I went to the database and found that no tables were created. What am I missing? Does the database server have to be on the same machine?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

we have just tested the latest MonoX installation and didn't get the error you have mentioned, so can you please send us some more information related to the error you get.

Also can you tell us which version of MonoX you have (you can see that by going to the bin folder and checking the version of MonoX.dll) because there was an issue related to the Language / Localization in the last version ? (Try to download the latest version of MonoX)

Information that we need:

1. SQL Server Version
2. MonoX version
3. Copy / Paste the error you have in the installation
4. If you can get the error from the EventLog that would be appreciated

Hi Kristijan,

So I was making a dumb mistake.

On the last step, I was selecting, "Install in Existing Database." I thought that was the appropriate selection if you create an empty database for MonoX to install for the first time.

As soon as I switched it to "Create New Database", it worked perfectly!

Thanks for the help. It looks like a great application. I'm very excited to dig into it.

Thanks,
Jason
