Many sites support emoticons at posts, e.g. see attached image from Facebook (seems to have recently added this, for now only at messages, not on wall posts & comments, although it might come there too in the future)

</br>would also be nice to have emoticon rendering (as icons instead of their maching text) - obviously a parsing module is needed. Facebook seems to add space chars before and after the emotion. This is the best practice, since Skype doesn't use spaces there and I always find it annoying that it replaces my text with icons, e.g. I write a greek questionmark ; and then close a parenthesis and it replaces it with a smiley even though before the questionmark I don't have a spacechar

</br>Note that inside the text the emoticon is kept as real text so one can copy-paste to other systems
