Hi Jason,
MonoX was initially developed in 2004., and was based on ideas brought to life by once popular iBuySpy portal starter kit. Many of older ASP.NET CMSes shared the same roots, but MonoX introduced several original ideas (drag and drop module instantiation and interactive personalization) that were later brought to mainstream by ASP.NET 2 Web parts framework. It was than decided to redevelop MonoX from scratch and have it support Web parts natively. It slowly evolved over the last three years, based on user feedback and real-life project requirements.
MonoX never was only a simple CMS, it always played a role of Web application framework. Besides public Web sites, dozens of complex intranet applications run on top of it. Now it also offers a complete subset of social networking Web parts.
You may not heard a lot about it since marketing was never a priority, and we worked closely with our partners on their projects without sharing too many information with the development community. It was also not a free project from the start, but it was latter decided to offer MonoX to the community and let it grow. We hope you'll enjoy it.
Regards,
Denis
